ARK Invest:Tesla Is Far Ahead In Three Key Areas
- Jan 16, 2019 -

According to foreign media reports, Catherine Wood, founder and CEO of ARK Invest, said Tesla had not participated in this year's North American International Auto Show, but the electric car maker was far ahead of other car manufacturers in three key areas.

ARK Invest: Tesla is ahead in three key areas

Wood believes that while traditional automakers have invested heavily in electrification, Tesla is leading the industry in battery technology, artificial intelligence and data collection.

Wood said, "Transportation is changing to electric travel, and Tesla is at the forefront of the industry. Other car manufacturers will find it hard to catch up, because this is Tesla's unique'DNA'. Wood believes Tesla has a cost advantage because its models S, X and 3 are all self-produced batteries, while other companies need to integrate vertically when producing electric vehicles.

In addition, Tesla's battery type gives it an additional advantage over other car manufacturers. Tesla's batteries are cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, which are often used in consumer electronics. Many other car companies use lithium-ion batteries. As a result, Tesla's battery costs are falling along the cost curve of consumer electronics products, far below the price of lithium-ion soft-pack batteries.

"From an engineering point of view, Tesla did an amazing thing, and everyone else thought it was impossible to do it, which made Tesla a leader in this area," Wood said. Wood predicts that "other automakers will turn to Nvidia for help, but the design cycle of Nvidia can't be as long as three to five years, and Tesla will launch a brand new electric car every one to two years."

Tesla has also collected billions of miles of data from its customers and will still collect more than one billion miles per quarter. Waymo, owned by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, ranks second in this category, with about 200 million miles of data. Wood said, "this is the power of the self driving car, and it is also the place we are going to go."
